Kairouan has been chosen as the capital of Islamic culture for 2009 following the decision taken by the plenary Conference of Culture Ministers of ISESCO Member States held in Algiers in 2004, within the framework of the program of the Organization aiming at raising awareness of the cultural contribution of cities that played a key role in the spreading of Islamic civilization and values.In accordance with the instructions of President Zine el Abidine Ben Ali in the speech he delivered on the occasion of the 21st anniversary of the Change, for starting working out the program of this celebration, the city of Kairouan will host this outstanding event including literary, cultural, artistic, intellectual and scientific aspects.The preparation of this event involved numerous national and international partners including the OIC under whose auspices this event will be held alongside various ministries, national institutions and brotherly and friendly countries which have provided valuable assistance. Intellectuals as well as the regional and local bodies of the city of Kairouan have contributed significantly to the development of this program.The festivities are due to start in March 2009 and will continue until the end of the year, including a rich program comprising intellectual and artistic events as well as festivals, exhibitions, competitions, parades, shows and workshops.These events cover a wide spectrum of art work creations, including those highlighting Kairouan civilization and that of the Islamic world in general.
